Hey there! Glad you found me!
My name is Chantal Vanderlaan and I’m the blogger behind My Two Cents Project. I’ve been working online as a web designer for the last few years and have also dabbled in internet marketing. On top of this, I work full-time and I’m a mom to two wonderful girls.
Last year (July 2014), I broke my left leg (both the fibula and tibia) and had to get a metal plate plus 11 pins put in (not fun). Because I couldn’t walk or drive, I couldn’t go to work which was fine with me because I got to spend more time with my kids. In December 2014, I got clearance to return to work but did so on a gradual return meaning 3 days per week. Returning on a part-time basis worked out perfectly because it still gave me a couple of days at home with my kids.
I stayed part-time until September 2015 when I resumed full-time duties at my “day job”. Honestly, I was devastated when I had to return full-time because I had gotten so used to the lifestyle of being at home with my kids more. I kept thinking to myself “there must be a way to make a living from home instead of going back to work”.
I even played around with the idea of quitting my job so I could pursue web design on a full-time basis, but after much soul-searching, I decided it wasn’t a great idea to give up my job on a whim, not to mention possibly putting my family in financial hardship.
So I closed my web design business for good!
Why did I do this? Simply because I wasn’t interested in working all day “in the office” and then going home to find myself glued on my computer until 11 o’clock finishing up websites for clients (and also working weekends). Yes it’s true that I had a handful of great clients that provided me with a nice “side income” but my heart wasn’t in it anymore.
Don’t get me wrong…working as a web designer was fun but it just wasn’t for me. The way I look at it, even though I was my own boss, I STILL was working for clients. Having clients + deadlines ON TOP of a full-time job was just too stressful so I made my decision to close my web design business and I haven’t regretted it one bit. At least now, I still have my evenings and my weekends to myself to spend with my kids.
So why am I starting this blog?
The fact that I closed my web design business doesn’t change the fact that I love working online. So basically I’m starting this blog to prove to myself that making money online is possible through other avenues (via affiliate marketing, advertisements, product creation, etc…). I’ve learned so much over the last 5-6 years from working in web design and working online in general that I thought “I have LOTS to offer my readers“! I love sharing what I learn with others so I thought a blog would be a perfect venue for me.
My mission is simple: Complete transparency – share everything I do to make my blog successful with my readers.
I’ve been inspired by a handful of female bloggers who have been able to make a great living from home. My dream is to be a successful blogger, to inspire others, and to one day, have the opportunity to leave my job and work from home.
I really hope to grow this blog into something special and I hope you’ll follow me along my journey!
